Review: Dr. Song 50% Lactic Acid Chemical Peel

With the anti-aging hype going on right now, many people turn to serums and facial moisturizers to target their issues, but they don't think about chemical peels. Chemical peels are great because over time they can actually eliminate fine lines and dark spots instead of just masking their appearance. I have had the chance to try out the Dr. Song 50% Lactic Acid chemical peel and my skin has never looked so bright and healthy.

What is a Lactic Acid chemical peel and what are the risks?
Lactic Acid is actually derived from milk, and it is a very mild chemical peel, but you can still see amazing benefits to your skin. In my work as an Esthetician I usually ask a few questions before deciding what chemical peel to use on my clients. If you are looking to get rid of hyperpigmentation, never had a chemical peel, have sensitive or sensitized skin more than likely I would use a Lactic peel on your skin.
Dr. Song's 50% Lactic Acid Chemical Peel will work by:
  • Brightening your skin
  • Smoothing the skin giving it an overall softer texture
  • Promoting cell turnover and boosting collagen production
  • Deep cleansing pores making extractions easier
  • Exfoliating the skin which will get rid of any rough or dead skin cells
  • Over time it will reduce or eliminate dark age or sun spots
The Risks:
Lactic Acid chemical peels are more gentle than others such as a Jessner's or TCA peel, so the risks aren't as great,  this is a chemical peel that should require no down time.
  • Dry flaking skin in some instances
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity for a few days

How to use the Dr Song 50% Lactic Acid chemical peel:
  • Cleanse your skin thoroughly and gently pat dry
  • Apply a toner -if there are any oils left on your skin the peel will not work because it can't get past that barrier. Let the toner sink in and dry
  • Get a fan brush, put some of the peel in a shallow dish, coat your brush in the peel.
  • Apply the chemical peel in these steps- Forehead, between your brows, outer cheeks, chin, neck, inner cheeks, nose, upper lip. The reasoning behind this is your inner cheeks, nose and upper lip are usually more sensitive to a chemical peel. When applying this peel try to work as quickly as possible without being sloppy be sure to get an even coverage.
  • Leave the Lactic Acid on as long as you can, but not longer than 5 minutes.
  • Take a COLD towel apply it to your face and press it in to your skin, use it to wipe off the peel, be thorough.
  • Apply a moisturizing facial mask. You absolutely need to add moisture after a chemical peel. I do not recommend doing a peel if you don't have a moisturizing mask to follow up with.
  • Tone your skin again and let it sink in.
  • Apply a serum if you wish, and follow up with a moisturizer
  • Apply sunscreen. *do not skip this step* You need a sunscreen 100% of the time after using a chemical peel. Use sunscreen every day otherwise your skin will burn and you may see even more sun spots.
  • I recommend using this peel every 2 weeks in a series of at least 6. You will see the most benefits from you skin this way.
You skin should not peel at all with this Lactic Acid so don't worry!

The Dr. Song 50% Lactic Acid chemical peel is a great tool to have at home. My skin has never looked so bright, I get compliments on my skin every day. I recommend this peel for everyone no matter what their skin type, even sensitive!
